As the art of writing Chinese characters (hàn zì 汉字), Chinese calligraphy, or shufa, is boasting as long a history as that of China itself. It is one of the highest forms of Chinese art.

Recently, Professor Yang Jilong from School of Education demonstrated a Chinese calligraphy lesson, for students from NHL-Stenden-DGUT campus program, providing them a chance to understand this antique Chinese traditional culture.

Professor Yang first gave a brief introduction to Chinese calligraphy and showed its charm by taking example of the poem On the Stork Tower by Wang Zhihuan. As Professor Yang said, the reason why he chose this poem was because its characters and meanings were easy to write and understand, and for better understanding, the version translated by Xu Yuanchong, an expert in translation, was adopted.
During the class, Professor Yang patiently taught them to write stroke by stroke and explained the meaning of each verse, while students imitated with deep interest and were enchanted by the charm of Chinese calligraphy culture.  Students developed varying calligraphic styles, but all highly appreciated by Professor Yang.

The Chinese calligraphy lesson not only offers an excellent platform for  students from NHL-Stenden-DGUT campus program to learn and experience Chinese traditional culture, but also arouses their interest in future cultural teaching courses.
